About Us

Our Organization

The Organization & Systems Development Center was established in 1974 at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland with the unique goal of applying Gestalt theory, concepts, and methodology at all levels of system in organizational contexts. The Gestalt Center for Organization & Systems Development (Gestalt OSD Center) conducts training programs and workshops under the auspices of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland Organization & Systems Development Integrative Studies Center, Inc. (GISOSDISC). Both organizations are independent non-profit educational entities.

We are not affiliated in any way with the former Gestalt Institute of Cleveland.

Our Mission

The Gestalt Center for Organization & Systems Development is dedicated to the advancement and teaching of Gestalt OSD theory, concepts, and methodology for individuals, groups, and organizations interested in enhancing self-mastery and use of self in organizational contexts. We are proud of our reputation as the premier "finishing school" for individuals at the Master's and doctorate degree level who seek to hone their intervention skills across multiple levels of system. Our ultimate aim in our training programs and workshops is to encourage and enable our students to walk into a room anywhere in the world, containing any number of people, and make a significant difference with their presence. Our Purpose is the transformation of humankind.

What We Offer

The Gestalt OSD Center offers both training programs and workshops that meet the needs of people already working in, or interested in working in, any professional organizational context. Our core programs are specifically designed to develop our participants’ knowledge and skills with regard to influencing the systems they work and live in. Gestalt OSD training programs have attracted participants from around the world, and we strive in each program to provide the greatest possible breadth and depth of differing perspectives. Currently we conduct regular programs in Israel, Norway, and Ghana. But we are always seeking new program sites, venues, and co-sponsors. As a result, many of our faculty are OSD graduates who come from our host countries and beyond, so that both our faculty and our participants are international.

What's Happening

Three OSD faculty have received the Organization Development Network's Lifetime Achievement Award, John D. Carter, Edwin C. Nevis and Brenda Jones.

The OSD leadership group met in September 2009 and decided to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the OSD Center training programs by Acknowledging Our Past, Transforming Our Present, and Becoming Our Future. In December 2009, we will initiate our first membership and fundraising drive to reconnect with our OSD training program graduates and to invite your involvement in the future of the OSD Center. In January 2010, we will announce the names of OSD training program graduates to whom the OSD Center has awarded the status of Certified Gestalt OSD Practitioner.

Making a difference with your presence underlies our training in and use of the Gestalt OSD body of knowledge. We seek multiple and more powerful ways to support our OSD graduates in using this body of knowledge for their own personal and professional development, and in supporting the OSD Center’s mission to make it available to a greater number of people around the world.

The quality of Gestalt OSD Center programs has always been our foremost concern, and we continue to meet or surpass our participants' high expectations. The Ghana (Africa) OSD training program has just successfully concluded its second offering; Mary Ann Rainey was in attendance for the final session. The OSD International Program has recently completed its second session in Hungary (the program will meet in Cape Town, South Africa in January for its third session). New dates for existing OSD training programs — including OSD Program (Standard and Weekend formats) and Becoming a Better Intervener — have been posted to the website. Our International Coaching Program (ICP), which was the first Gestalt-oriented coaching program to be granted International Coach Federation accreditation, has been redesigned to better meet the needs of our participants and graduates; we begin our new International Coaching Program next May.

John D. Carter, one of the OSD training program founders in 1974, received Emeritus status from NTL this August, and in October was presented with the Organization Development Network's Lifetime Achievement Award. This year, 15 partial scholarships were granted to OSD training participants from the Bargyh/Nevis/Carter Scholarship Fund, and one full scholarship was granted from the Gaffney Irish Scholarship Fund. Several OSD graduates contributed to the fields of OD and applied behavioral sciences by publishing books and making presentations. In addition, the Center's faculty continue teach Gestalt OSD-focused courses in many of the most innovative advanced degree programs in the country, and we maintain organizational partnerships with a number of these institutions.
